A private 28,000-hectare outback station in North Queensland. Ten suites, 26 guests, and one extraordinary landscape.

Luxury Accommodation in the Heart of Outback North Queensland

Mt Mulligan Lodge offers modern, laid-back luxury accommodation in one of North Queensland’s most remote and breathtaking outback settings, a private 28,000-hectare heritage station in Northern Outback Queensland, where 10 exclusive suites sit on the edge of a freshwater weir beneath the 18-kilometre sandstone wall of Mount Mulligan. Welcoming up to 26 guests at a time, it offers an authentic outback experience that is as intimate as it is extraordinary. This is the outback in all its rugged, untamed glory, experienced in complete comfort and modern style.

The Location

Mt Mulligan Lodge sits 160 kilometres northwest of Cairns in the remote heart of North Queensland, on land known as Ngarrabullgan to the Djungan people — its Traditional Custodians — for more than 37,000 years. Two of the oldest known Aboriginal sites in Queensland are found on the tabletop of Mount Mulligan itself, lending this outback lodge a sense of depth and significance that is rare even by Australian standards.

This is Australia’s big sky country: a landscape of stark red earth plains, eucalyptus woodlands, seasonal billabongs, and rock formations shaped over millennia. Piercing blue days give way to brilliant sunsets and ink-black skies crowded with stars. The region is dominated by the seasons — in the dry, watercourses thread across parched land; as the wet approaches in December, monsoon storms transform the landscape to green within days. Wildlife surges: jabiru, magpie geese, sea eagles, freshwater crocodiles, barramundi, brumbies and kangaroos. It is a living, breathing outback theatre, and Mt Mulligan Lodge has the best seat in the house.

Getting here is an experience in itself. The lodge is a 35-minute scenic helicopter journey from Cairns, or a 2.5–3 hour private 4WD transfer for those who want to feel the landscape unfold around them. For arrival by private jet, a landing strip is located nearby at Mareeba.

The Lodge

Mt Mulligan Lodge accommodates up to 26 guests across 10 suites, an intimacy that defines the entire experience. Four architecturally designed pavilions, inspired by the honest pastoral structures of the Australian outback, sit on the water’s edge of a eucalyptus-fringed freshwater weir. Every suite frames the full sweep of the Mount Mulligan escarpment, connecting guests to the landscape from the moment they enter.

Inside, earthy tones of plush linen, sisal rugs and lavish leather furniture create a rich sense of grounding in the environment, mirroring the hues of the landscape outside. Dark grey stone tiles and bronze fittings lend the ensuite bathrooms a feel that is both luxurious and calming. Slide open the glass and timber doors onto your private deck to run a deep outdoor bath with uninterrupted views across Northern Outback Queensland - an experience thats both awe-inspiring and deeply relaxing.

The pavilions are designed for flexibility. The Outback Room is ideal for solo travellers or couples, while the Outback Suite adds a generous adjoining lounge, complete with wood-burning fire and private deck, for those seeking extra space to unwind. For families and groups, the Outback Pavilion offers two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a communal lounge. One pavilion is fully wheelchair accessible, and each guest is assigned their own electric buggy to explore the property with ease. Every suite is private, with captivating views of the sparkling weir and the imposing ridges of Mount Mulligan — a landscape of profound Indigenous significance since time immemorial.

The lodge has recently unveiled a purpose-built spa and private mineral bathing experience — a new chapter in outback luxury accommodation that brings restorative wellness to one of Australia’s most remote and remarkable settings. Dining is an equally considered affair: menus built around foraged, locally sourced and freshly grown seasonal produce, tailored to individual tastes, and served in a way that is hearty, nourishing and unmistakably of this place.

The station itself — all 28,000 heritage hectares of it — is your private domain. There are no day visitors, no passing traffic, and no other guests beyond your group. Mt Mulligan Lodge is recognised by the Sydney Morning Herald Traveller Sustainable Travel Awards and has been featured in Qantas Travel Insider as a benchmark for outback luxury in North Queensland.

The Experience

The activities on offer at Mt Mulligan Lodge reach deep into the landscape and its history. Explore the ruins of the historic Mount Mulligan coal mine and abandoned township. Take an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) across the station at dawn. Cast a line for barramundi in the billabong. Join a guided nature walk through eucalyptus woodland rich with birdlife. Take a scenic helicopter flight over the escarpment for a perspective on this ancient land that few ever see. Or simply sit with a sundowner as Mount Mulligan glows red in the evening light, because sometimes the most extraordinary thing this outback lodge offers is doing nothing at all.

We manage every detail of your stay, from helicopter transfer coordination to personalised activity itineraries. For groups, Mt Mulligan Lodge offers exclusive private hire across all 10 suites — an unmatched setting for incentive groups, milestone celebrations, and special occasions in the Australian outback.

All stays at Mt Mulligan Lodge are fully hosted, with meals, guided experiences and station activities included. For those seeking outback luxury accommodation in North Queensland that is genuine, immersive and utterly unforgettable, Mt Mulligan Lodge delivers without compromise.
